Unreal Tournament Strategy
Written By: Raven (AG-Demonknight)

This article will hopefully give the reader who hasn't played too much Unreal Tournament
a really good idea whats goin on. Its all basic knowledge with some useful tips about
just about everything. The First area I'll cover will be weapon use.

Rocket Launcher
The rocket launcher has always been the favorite weapon of most players. Experience
with this weapon can be deadly. Especially in defending situations. The secondary
fire is not useful so just ignore it. When using this weapon against others it can
be used several ways. First, you can load the rockets in the chamber and fire multiple
at the enemy. These spread out unless while your holding down primary you also hold down
secondary. This will cause the rockets to group. The spread is good for out in the open
and is harder to dodge. The group should be used in closer quarters and fired at the wall
or the ground right in front of or next to the enemy. Another way to use this weapon is to
let the launcher lock on to an enemy. This will cause the rockets to follow an enemy. It
takes patience and isn't always practical though.

Shock Rifle
The next weapon that has been used more and more by the experienced players
is the shock rifle. This weapon also has lots of uses and can be awesome with
practice. The primary fire fires a quick star trek style beam the knocks back
enemies. This is good for places like the top of a tower in facing worlds or near
an edge. The secondary fire shoots large balls that are slow moving but do more damage.
It is very easy to fill a room with these balls, which are not easily avoided when there
are a lot. The prize of this weapon though is its explosion feature. This is achieved by
firing the secondary ball and hitting it with the primary. It causes a large explosion
wherever the ball is hit. It is very powerful and can usually kill an enemy that is
caught in it. This weapon is great for firing at smaller entrances or at trailing enemies.

Flak Cannon
The next favorite of weapons is the flak cannon. This weapon can be unequaled in close
quarter combat. The flak is burning hot metal shards and can be very powerful when hit
with it head on. It also curves around corners a little and bounces off walls, floors,
etc. The secondary fire, or the flak grenade, can also be very deadly. If an enemy is hit
with this they will see a smiley face on the grenade before they die.

Redeemer
The most powerful weapon in the game, the Redeemer, is often considered a toy. This
can be the most useful weapon in the game however as it can clear out a room of enemies
in just a second. This is a nuclear device fired only once and is usually difficult to
come by. The primary fire launches a slow moving rocket that explodes on contact. This
creates a large expanding dome that kills everything in its path, including you if you're
not careful. The secondary fire allows you to steer through the eyes of the rocket and is
great for finding the flag carrier. This feature doubles as a spy.
The next weapon, the Plasma Gun, is one of the easiest to use. It is a great gun for
beginners because it is easy to hi the enemy with. The primary fire shoots slow moving
orbs at great distance. The secondary fire is the best part of this gun though. It lets
out a constant stream, which can be moved to hit the enemy. It doesn't have great distance
but is highly effective in close combat. When this weapon is coupled with quad damage it is
almost unstoppable. This is a great weapon for chasing a flag carrier that your not too far
behind.

Bio-Rifle
The biorifle, or jelly gun as we like to call it, is also a very useful weapon in certain
situations. It is difficult to use but is great in CTF games or small death match arenas.
The primary fire shoots small globs of biochemical fluid, which harms the enemy when they
step on them or get hit by them. They can be rather power full. These blobs can be shot on
walls, ceilings, the ground or if you're underwater they will rise to the surface. The
secondary loads up a larger glob that if fired directly at someone will almost always kill
them. When this glob is launched anywhere else it explodes into smaller blobs, which will eventually explode themselves. A nice use for this gun is to fire it on doors or in hallways that will cause the enemy to have to wait to pass or kill themselves. The next weapon, the minigun, is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The primary fire and secondary are almost identical except for that the secondary fires faster but with less accuracy. This weapon is great when fighting someone with a slower firing weapon and is unstoppable with quad damage.
The sniper rifle can often be the most annoying, and useful weapon. The primary fire shoots
a single but powerful bullet. When aimed at the head this can kill in one shot.
The secondary fire zooms the rifle's scope in and out. This weapon is most often used in
larger flag tag levels or in spots where the player can hide. It is one of the easiest
ways to stop a flag carrier in CTF.

Impact Hammer
Next is one of my personal favorites, the Impact Hammer. Also known as the pump gun, air
piston, or item of mass humiliation. The primary fire of this weapon charges a large piston
and when you run into someone with this it causes a lot of damage. The secondary fire
works quicker but with less power. The pump gun is often underrated and has multiple uses.
By simply chasing a flag carrier you can cause him to fall of the edge or distract him
while someone else kills them. This weapon is great against rocket launchers and long range
weapons because it often causes them to panic and misfire.

Ripper
The Ripper can also be an underrated weapon. The primary fire shoots razors that ricochet
off of surfaces. The secondary causes them to explode on contact. The primary is great for
small areas and for firing around corners. This weapon is also good for head shots. The
easiest way to get a head shot with this or the sniper rifle is to aim slightly above the
head of an opponent. In the open the secondary fire comes in handy when fired at the feet
of an opponent.

The Enforcer
The enforcer is the pistol-like weapon that you start out with. This weapon uses the same
ammo as the minnigun and behaves in the same manner. Primary fire shoots bullets at normal
speed while secondary fires the weapon ghetto style (sideways) which shoots faster at the
cost of accuracy. A second enforcer can also be picked up for dual firing, which works
almost as well as the minigun. This is the default weapon that you always start out with.

Translocator
The translocator can be a nice device but becomes annoying as a weapon. The primary
fires a disk. The secondary translocates you to the location of that disc. The primary
will also recall the disc. If someone damages your disc before you translocate to it
or recall it you will die when you attempt to recall or translocate to it. This can also
be used as a weapon. If you throw it at someone and translocate to it while it's touching
them it will kill them instantly. But this is very cheap and people will hate you if you
do this. Never, ever use this as a weapon! This device is great for avoiding confrontations
when you have limited health or weapons. You can also use it to get to tough spots, where
often items such as quad damage, the redeemer, or a shield belt are waiting. You cannot
however translocate with the flag. You will drop it if you try.

Chainsaw
The last device is the chainsaw. Dont even try to use it because it sucks. You can get
headshots with it but its next to impossible and the weapon itself isn't that powerful.

Different weapons work nicely on different levels and different games, so don't get
too attached to one weapon and try to learn how to use all of them.

Weapon Usage
If you have your choice of weapons you can use the correct ones to counter attacks
from others. For instance, when someone is firing a minigun or a plasma gun at you
it is best to counter with a weapon that can end the battle sooner like a rocket launcher
or a flak cannon. An even better tactic, if possible, would be to fight from a distance
with a sniper rifle or a shock rifle. When using a shock rifle, you can keep enemies away
from you by using the explosion. To counter the explosion, use the ripper or flak around corners or behind bunkers. When others are using the rocket launcher again it is best to stay away. Use weapons that allow you to move around when fighting them. A shock rifle is nice, but you can get yourself caught standing still when trying to use explosion. Use the secondary fire. These can fill a room and often will through an enemy into a wall and cause their rockets to misfire, often killing themselves. The best way to avoid someone sniping you when you're out in the open is to translocate. Sometimes throwing a translocater and jumping off the edge of a cliff or building will fool others into thinking you made a mistake. This is also the best way to avoid a redeemer. If others have quad damage you have two options. Run like a little girl, which is often the best choice, or run towards them. If you stay close to them they may kill themselves too being as the quad damage applies toward them as well. When you fighting with little health use a weapon that can kill instantly like the sniper rifle, rocket
launcher, or flak cannon. This way you can usually get a kill before you die. Get as
many items as you can. Passing up killing someone to get a shield belt or quad damage
will help you greatly in the long run. These things are very important and can get you
a lot of quick kills in a row.

Facing Worlds Strategy
I have always had one favorite level in Unreal Tournament and it is the facing worlds.
This paragraph will contain almost all of my techniques on this level (I cant give them
all away). The first ideas I picked up were from attacking. Due to the easy defendability
of the bases in this level, one must find another way in. Hence forth, the translocater.
With a little practice one can learn how to scale the side of the base in about 5-10 seconds
. And it is possible to jump down if you plan on exiting this way too. There are a couple
of paths and fakes down the side of this building so take some time to explore it.

Once others catch on to the climbing routine, you can get yourself into the sniper room
and even the redeemer from the top. An even quicker way to get to the bottom of the base
from the top is to throw a translocator to the bottom, jump off the side (make sure you're
far enough away from the building or the flag may get stuck) and translocate to the bottom. Then catch the flag when it falls and run your ass off.

Another way to take in this level is to get armor and 100 health and run straight out
the redeemer room. People will usually wait for you to come back out while you're running
towards your base. If they follow you they will often not have body armor and kill or
badly injure themselves. You may often end up getting the redeemer too, in which I usually
turn and fire it at the base to stop others pursuing me.

This is always where another trick comes into play. This one requires teamwork though.
Have a teammate wait in the redeemer room right behind the portal with his primary pump
gun charged and angled a little to either side. When you run into the redeemer room this
will propel you almost halfway to your base. It will also giblitize others that attempt
to follow you. When you're running back with the flag just move and jump a lot to avoid
snipers.

Another little trick which will occasionally work is to hide your translocater in the
enemy base before you return the flag for a point. Then as soon as your return it,
translocate to it and take the flag again. It saves you the trouble of having to run
back to the base and can really piss off the other team.
When defending your base it is very simple. Make sure you always have rockets and watch
the flag. Defending with the shock rifle isn't bad either but if you keep the front door
covered and the flag watched, no ones getting in. Leave sniping to the lesser talented
and only go through portals if you need something in there. If your flag does get taken
and they go through a portal just wait for them outside your base. They have to come out
sometime.

My Opinion
This is all I have to share for now and nothing makes you a better Unreal player than
lots of practice. Soon there will be an Unreal tips 2 but for now I have a tournament
I have to concentrate on. Remember, Unreal Tournament, not women, is Gods gift to man.
Unreal doesn't complain. You don't have to buy Unreal stuff, except maybe a 3d card, and
Unreal, unlike women, can be played anytime. The only thing Unreal can't do is get you
food. But I would still take Unreal over most women.

NEW TIP!!!

Super Sniping - By Sean "Flava" Flavin
We all realize that after doing something so much we tend to get better. Well I have found that after so long, I have been able to use a sniper rifle as if it were a normal close combat gun. I even pull off head shots with nearly every click of the mouse. I got so good by playing Deck16 with a 999 frag limit. It helps coordination a lot, and since the sniper rifle is so powerful as is, whats better than having a powerful accurate weapon up close, that can also be used a mile away!

Double Translocator Shot Trick - By [Chaos]_SJ
To reach the maximum height with your translocator, you should shoot it up and warp in, when it reaches it's highest pint. When warped, immediatly shoot it again onto the high obstacle you want to reach. Double shooting the translocator is guarantueed to get you on some spots, that were believed 'unreachable', like on the big edge, splitting Lavagiant in two. It may help to first get some jump boots and jump first before shooting the translocator, so you may go even higher.

I mean Straight down! - By Rainman
An extremely good tip to use is with one of the most feared weapons in the game (well, maybe not but i love it because of it's many uses). When you have the GES BioRifle and you are being chased by someone, charge it up to it's full potential. Then, aim straight down, and i mean STRAIGHT DOWN! if you dont aim straight down it will kill you. If done correctly, The person that was chasing you should be nothing but a bunch of gibs. This is an extremely good tip to use on people who love to give chase. They NEVER see it coming.

Kung Fu Fighting - By BabySpaceShrimp
One on One fighting can be aproached using what is called BaguaZhang which is a style of Kung Fu. This style is most effective with a minigun against an opponent with a rocket launcher. It uses a circular walking technique which has 3 intentions: 1) confuse the opponent, 2) exhaust the opponent, 3) break down the opponent from his weaker sides. When your opponent attacks, slip to his side in a circular fasion to avoid being hit while ALWAYS facing him. Dont ever turn your back toward him. Rush in as close as you can in a tight circular movement and constantly change your position so that he is always facing AWAY from you. In UT you can only hit an opponent that is in front of you. You will wear him down as you tightly cirlcle strafe around him all the while pouring ammo into him of course! Remember to stay in close so that he receives maximum damage and remains confused as to your position. Many of you probably already use this technique unconsciously and find it quite satisfying compared to the brute force technique of 6 rockets flying randomly down blind corridors!

Behind View! - By HarkRank
When playing on a CTF map that has an architecture like Facing Worlds or LavaGiant, it's good to be able to run backwards and shoot at the enemy who is following you when you got the flag, without risking to fall off the edge (down into lava or other death). Bind "behindview 1" to a close key and all you have to do is press it and you have a third-person perspective.

Have a tip? Send it over!

Head Damage - By Deathmai
Just as in Unreal, the heads in Unreal Tournament are fragile to damage. If there is enough power to do so, some head shots mean decapatation. It only takes a few shots to the head to bring a guy down.
The Chainsaw can be a pain.. - By Lt. Doomsday
But it can be your friend if used correctly and wisely. I always try to use it when someone is fighting with someone else {get them from behind} Never charge with the chainsaw draw, that is just dumb as hell. I also would support having the chainsaw hot key'd for your last resort against a person with a weak weapon like an enforcer or a translocator.
Be strong when you fight - By [AAH]Deathrow
Every map has many powerups across the map, in both DM and CTF taking these powerups is very important. Try to know all the maps by heart so you know where to find them. Most skilled players have routes to collect the most powerups in the shortest time, try to walk these routes and find out the routes of your opponents but be carefull not to be too predictable.
Practice your Weapons - By Blackdog
You won't always have access to the weapons you want on a map, learn how to get the most out of the ones you have. The secondary fire of the bio-rifle is slow, but devastating when it hits. The pulse rifle needs a little extra lead time with its primary shot. The razor secondary fire will toss someone back... or off a cliff... when used right. Use your favorite weapons, but spend time practicing with the others. When you can be deadly with any and all of the weapons in the game, any opponent will think twice before starting a fight with you.
Accuracy isn't everything - By Electroman
If you prefer to use the rocket launcher at close range, don't try to be accurate with it. Use it's explosive power and aim at the opponents feet. The continuos shrapnel blow-back will do more for you in the long run than that one lucky direct hit.
Jump or die - By BManzo
You must learn to jump, jumping can save your life, a lot of newbies like to shoot all over the place ( this also means your legs, feet and the ground) so by jumping you can avoid a lot of newbie attacks. I have been playing for awhile, and have also found that hitting a good player with a rocket dead on will never work so you must aim at the ground which will cause the player some damage. This is also where jumping comes into play, if you jump before the rocket hits the ground you will not recieve as much splash damage.
To Survive.. - By Cypher
NEVER STAND STILL! The most difficult target is a moving target. If you are standing still to aim at someone, then you are an easy target for someone else. Always move. It may be difficult to aim when you are moving, but if you are not...someone else shoots you easily!!!
Here is a tip for newcomers! - By Secretsavage
If you are still running around and shooting with your keyboard. STOP THAT. It's not lame, but you improve your shooter-skill by several hundred times by learning how to use the mouse and the most important styles of them all: "STRAFING"! Strafing means that you move sideways so you becomes a harder target and a better player. Train strafing by aim at some mark anywhere, for ex. a monument of some kind that you can move around, and try to keep the "target" in your sight ALL THE TIME when strafing around it. And for checking that you are not missing the target. Fire at it and see if you hit it. When you are getting good at it, PRACTICE EVEN MORE!
Long Small Hallways - By [Chaos]_SJ
In many deathmatch levels there are long small paths like in DM-Pressure. When playing with many others it is often good for your frag score to blindly launch missles in the long paths, because 2 out of 5 times you will frag someone.
8 Steps to being smarter - By Happosai
As you may know, u will lose a frag if u kill urself.

1. Don't panic, NEVER!
2. Don't use flak against the wall or narrow hallways
3. Don't aim at the wall (rockets/flak in particular).
4. Use a enforcer or minigun or plasma gun or sniper rifle w/ the damage amplifier. ( No way u can kill urself w/ these)
5. Make sure razors won't rebound to you when firing
6. Might want to watch ur step in the maps where u can fall to your doom.
7. Dont blow up plasma ball in ur face, where the primary shot is fired @ alternate fire. (this is a very rare situation.. i've tried it... I'd call u stupid if u did=)
8. Fire redeemer to a distance! Make sure opponent wont blow redeemer up in your face.
Alw
ays do the unexpected - By [AAH]Deathrow
When you play always try to think what your opponents next move is, will he go right or left and where will he be when he goes around a corner. If you know this very well, you'll know where to hit them when they dont expect it. Try to think what you would do in his situation, when you see your opponent first you'll have a big advantage.
Always have a backup plan - By KINISON
If you're like me, and you like to snipe, heres a great tip. There are always at least two good sniper spots on most levels. Never back yourself into a corner you cant get out of if need be. Fire your translocator to a secondary sniper postion before camping in your primary one.Use the translocator when things get hot and your under fire. A good sniper is not seen...a great sniper has a plan if he is seen.
Slude 'em all! - By AramPan_Singapore
Find a nice corner, charge up your Bio Sludge. Fake death, then release the full load on unsuspecting victims.
Stop Jumping Around! - By Jamie York
When you're in combat, like 1v1 with Rocket Launchers, most people jump around in circles firing at the opponent's feet. Try (if you're in this situation) to slow down the flow by either stop jumping around like an idiot or fire a rocket at your opponent rather than trying to inflict spalsh damage. This has helped my 1v1 combat skills loads.
Hug the walls Sally! - By BostonStrangler
I was an avid player of the first game and I have continued to build my skill through the second game. One technique that I try to incorporate into my gameplay is simple, which is the way I walk down corridors. I try to walk along side the wall to make myself a slightly harder target for players who might come around the corners and fire. This keeps me from being "perfectly" lined up with my opponent. The key to doing this properly is to be aware of rocket launching/flak cannon players as the explosion from these weapons impacting on the wall can put you behind the eightball in a hurry. It's not perfect, but at times it can allow you to get the jump on an opponent, depending on the map and lighting.
Minigunnage - By Minigunner
If your Anything like me the minute you pick the Minigun up in Unreal Tournament you feel only god himself can stop you (or a REDEEMER!!) but if you just go in hard spraying left and right, you are just going to waste alot of bullets and do little damage, the most effective use of the Minigun is firstly has a backup weapon like the Shock Rifle in your arsenal. When your poor target is some distance away from you pull out the Shock Rifle and get their attention, remember that the Shock Rifle is practically an instant hit, if there under your crosshair, there hit. Move towards them fast and strafe left to right, then right again, keeping your movements irradical so your target can't predict your next move (easily anyway) when you feel you are close enough for the bullets from the minigun on standard fire will hit your prey, whip it out and keep a steady stream on them, if there not dead by now, or running get close (but not close enough to make it too easy to shoot you and then start with the secondary fire, and give them some new 'speed holes'. What's that you say, they have a shield belt, suck the power out of that sucker the same way, but intead of charging for them move slower, they are going to be the EGO MAN 5000 while they have that thing, so use it to your advantage. Instead of using the standard fire of the Shock Rifle use the secondary fire, but a good method is to fire one shot to thier left, one to thier right and one on them, not many will hit, but they will be in dodge-a-matic mode to protect their shield when you've worn there belt down, or got close pull the minigun out and if theres some belt left, straight to Secondary fire for you and scream vengeance like qoutes at your computer as your target goes down!

So there you have, no more bad guy, just make sure you have the ammo to do it!
Feign it baby! - By [Chaos]_SJ
Feign Death - Not many people know this is possible in UT (I believe it was already there in Unreal). A player can Feign Death by pressing the 'F' key. No matter what, it sure makes for some hilarious occasions and can be a real lifesaver. When you are (very) low on health and being chased by some mean machine opponent you can for example run around a corner, feign death and 'revive' when your opponent hurries past you to consecutively blow him apart with some well aimed shots in his back.
The Piston Jump - By Fred
Ever wonder how and heck people get to unjumpable areas without the teleporter? Its easy! Just hold down your primary piston fire down and aim to the ground. At the same time, release and jump, you will then be sent flying into the air reaching your damage amp or sniping spot. The downfall is, it will take about half of your life away.
Flagcarrier - By [Chaos]_SJ
When you are carrying the flag, always remember that you'll drop it when you: Die / Feign Death / Translocate. If you are low on health and fear you may not reach your own flag to score, you can always give the flag and -optionally- some weaponry to a teammate by translocating. Weapons can be thrown away with the 'drop weapon'-key. I'm not sure what that is, but sometimes it's handy.
Stealth is always a good idea.. - By Urszula
If you are defending an area, wait till you hear someone approach. Hide in a spot, wait till they pass or shoot them with a high power weapon like a sniper rifle or rocket launcher just before they approach your location. This surprises them and usually takes off a lot of health or kills them. If you do kill someone, it is more than likely that they'll anticipate you in the same spot again, so after killing people its often a good idea to move to a new location. Standing in the middle of the path, blaring away with a machine gun on alternate fire, as 2 foes run towards you is a recipe for disaster.
Shock Combo - By The Animal
The Shock Rifle can be very effective. Its primary and secondary shots are the ball and the direct beam. The ball shot is slow, but strong, and if you know that your adversary isn't going to move relatively soon, it can kill them easily. The beam shot, however, is more effective. It instantly hits the target when fired, and may decapitate or blow someone away in one shot. When these two shots are put together, it is even more effective. If you shoot the ball shot at your opponent, and when it gets near them, blast the ball with a beam shot, then it may kill more than one in the area.
Hide and Seek CTF - By MoonBoy
If you're playing capture the flag and find yourself in the situation where you have the other teams flag, and someone has your flag, try this trick. It works best when there are many players and lots of action. When you're in this situation, what tends to happen is that you and the other flag carrier find a good hiding spot and wait to see who gets found and popped first. However, when there are lots of players the problem is that as soon as your flag gets returned, someone usually grabs it again faster than you can get back from your hiding place to score. To solve this problem many people will start heading back to score as soon as they see their flag was dropped (but not yet returned). This way, there is a better chance that your flag hasn't been snagged again before you get there since it will actually be in a known location for a shorter period of time. If you see this happening, you can use that logic against the other team. What you do is get deep in your hiding place and push F for a fake death. When your dude pretends to be dead, he will drop the enemie's flag. This almost always lures the enemy flag carrier out of his hiding spot and should give your teammates a better chance of finding and popping him. All you have to remember is stand back up and grab the flag again before it automatically returns to their base.
If you have a really good hiding spot, this is also a really good way to taunt your enemy... fake death, stand up and grab the flag, repeat... This way they keep seeing "SomeDude dropped your flag", and "SomeDude has your flag", while that loud siren keeps going off. Pretty annoying when they can't find you.
